I've registered and logged in but nothing happens when I click Play.
Usually this problem is caused by a pop up blocker. All the activities launch in a 'Pop up'
(new) window and it is very common for a browser to be set not to open them -
you will frequently see an alert that a 'pop up has been blocked'.
However it is usually quite straightforward to change the configuration to
permit certain content.
There are, though, a large number of pop up blockers in common use (as well as the
one built into every browser, Google, Yahoo & MSN toolbars also have one and
some
antivirus packages will block pop ups too) so we don't give specific advice.
However your browser's help section will certainly cover it and searching
the web for
'disable pop up blockers' will also produce a lot of information on
the common pop up blockers and how to configure them.
If the problem persists please contact us at support@learingclip.co.uk at which point we will be able
to help more if you can tell us which browser and operating system you have.
I get a message saying 'You have logged in at another location.....'
You can only have one log in at a time to your Learning Clip account.
If you log in
on a second computer your first log in will expire generating the message 'You have logged in at another location.....'
If you suspect that someone else knows and is using your login details you should
change your password either by visiting the my account page or the forgotten
password page.
I want use my whole class to use the activities.
Learning Clip has an innovative feature called the Class Login.
The 'Class Login' is intended for teachers who use Learning Clip
in an ICT suite or Classroom where many children are working
on many computers simultaneously. Instead of logging on by using a combination of email and password
Children can now log on using a single word or phrase specified by you. This approach both protects your privacy
and makes the process easier for children to carry out unaided.
To set up a Class Login.
1. Logon and go to the 'my account' page
2. In the 'Class logon' field enter the word or phrase you'd like your class to use to logon.
3. Click the 'Save Pupil Logon' button.
Once set up, as many as 30 pupils in your class will also be able to login using the word or phrase you specified.
The feature is only available during school hours (weekdays 8:00 - 17:30).
You can change the Class Login at anytime by revisiting the 'my account' page.
When I set a pupil login it says 'word already in use'
Your Class Login must be unique and just like hotmail or similar services the
logins are on a first come first served basis. So if your first choice has been
taken try another.
The login can be up to 24 characters long and you can use any combination of
letters or numbers, spaces are also permitted. The Class Login is not case
sensitive.
You can change the Class Login at anytime by revisiting the 'my account' page.
I want to change my login details
Your login consists of an email address and a password.
To change your password either visit the my account page or the forgotten
password page.
To change the email address please contact
support@learningclip.co.uk from
your existing email address and give us details of your new email. It may take
up to 72 hrs to change the email on your account.
Alternatively you can create a new account using a different email address.
What is an interactive whiteboard
An
interactive whiteboard is an interactive display connected to a
computer. A projector is used to display the computers desktop on the
whiteboard. The computer can then be controlled by interacting with the
whiteboard by using a pen or finger or other device.
A high proportion of Primary class rooms in the UK are fitted with interactive
whiteboards - the most common brands being either the Smartboard or the
Promethean Activboard.
Are the resources only available to schools?
No, the Learning Clips are available to anyone - teacher, parent, child - with an
interest in teaching and learning maths. The activities are just as enjoyable
and beneficial for children when used alone on a PC as they are when used
on a whiteboard in front of the whole class
Are the learning clips only suitable for use in the UK?
No, Maths is the same the whole world over. Although our initial impetus was to
help teachers in England with the renewed Primary Framework for Mathematics and
the clips are listed according to the objectives in the framework. They are also
listed by topic area enabling you to easily find an appropriate clip to include
in almost any maths lesson.
Is there a charge for using the resources?
During the initial development of the resources we have made them free to use by
anyone - teachers, parents, children - interested in teaching and learning
maths.
Learning Clip Ltd is a commercial operation and since 16th January 2010 a portion of
the resources are only available by subscription. Many of the resources are
still free to registered users.
What is the renewed Primary framework for mathematics
The new primary framework for mathematics was introduced in 2007 with the aim of
building upon the success of the original 1990's framework in light of the
principles of 'Every Child Matters' and 'Excellence and Enjoyment'. It sets out
the recommended curriculum for teaching maths in English primary schools.
Click here for more information about learning clip and the
renewed framework.
The learning Clips only cover some ages will there be more added?
At time of writing, Learning Clip activities are available for Y3, Y4 and Y5
pupils. Resources for Y6 are in production and will begin to come online during
summer 2009. After completion of the Key Stage 2 material (7 - 11 years old)
we will be reviewing our progress prior to starting work on KS1 - probably in
early 2010.
Do I have to be online to use the resources?
Yes, we think of learning clip as a sevice rather than a product and part of that
service is to continuously improve and develop our resources. Online delivery is
the only efficient way we can keep all our users up to date with our latest
content.
What do I need to access the resources?
Not much more than the computer you are currently looking at. You'll need to have
reasonably recent versions of Adobe Flash Player and Windows Media Viewer
installed to view the interactive activities. We can perform a system check to
make sure your computer has the necessary components installed.
The activities include short pieces of streamed video so although not absolutely
necessary you will ideally have a broadband connection.
For most consitent performance we recomend using Internet Explorer 7. However the
site also performs very adequately in IE 6 & 8 and Google Chrome.
You'll also need Adobe Reader to view and print the worksheets.
I can see the Video but not the activity
Have you updated your version of Adobe Flash Player? If you have and still cannot
see the interactive activity, check that you are using a recomended browser and
that the Flash Player is enabled.
To enable Flash Player in Internet Explorer, click the tools menu, select manage
add ons, select Shockwave Flash Object from the add ons list and click the
enable option.
I can see the activity but not the Video
Do you have an up to date version of Windows Media Player installed?
In some instances you may see the video on the computer screen but not the
whiteboard. You may be able resolve this by adjusting the Windows Media Player
settings:
In the Windows Media Viewer tools menu (right click the icon top left if you
don't see the menu)
Select options.
Click the performance tab.
Click the Advanced button.
Uncheck the Use overlays option - OK & OK.
Can I use Learning Clip on a mac?
We have successfully run the Learning Clip activities on a wide range of Macs/browsers/OS X versions.
There can be issues getting the video to run satisactorily. The most reliable combinations we have identified to date are:
-
OS X 10.3.9 (or lower) | Safari 1.3.2 (or lower) | Windows Media Player 9 for Mac OS X
- OS X 10.3.9 (or lower) | Firefox 2.0.0.20 (or lower) | Windows Media Player 9 for Mac OS X
- OS X 10.4 (or higher) | Safari 3.3.2 (or lower) | (best) Windows Media Player 9 for Mac OS X or (alternative) flip4mac 2.2.3.7
- OS X 10.4 (or higher) | Safari 4 (or higher) | (best) flip4mac 2.2.3.7 or (alternative)Microsoft Silverlight 3
- OS X 10.4 (or higher) | firefox (or higher) | (best) Windows Media Player 9 for Mac OS X or (alternative) flip4mac 2.2.3.7
These combinations were tested on G4 PPC, G5 PPC and Intel Macs running OS X versions from 10.3.5 to 10.5.7. These recommendations
are based on plugin versions available at time of writing.
We found that installing Flip4mac or Silverlight disabled Windows Media Player
and that to be certain of using a specific plugin we had to move unwanted plugins to the 'disabled plugins' folder. The plugins we used were from:
Windows Media Player 9 for Mac OS X
Microsoft Silverlight 3
flip4mac 2.2.3.7
The Learning Clip doesn't fit on my screen
The clip window is a fixed size of 1024 x 768 pixels and is designed to fit
common screen and projector resolutions. If the clip window is cropped
then your screen / projector resolution is less than the window size most
probably 800 x 600 pixels.
It may be possible to change your screen resolution - Right click an empty part
of your
desktop, select properties from the menu, select the settings tab, adjust the
resolution slider.
Many older projectors have a maximum resolution of 800 x 600 pixels and you will
not be able to increase that. You should however still be able to get the full
benefit of the clip by using the red button to enlarge the activity to occupy
the full screen.
When I start an activity I can see 'checking for voting' what does this mean?
Over 200 of the Learning Clip activities are adapted for use with the Promethean
Activote and Activexpression learner response systems. The adapted activities
perform a short check before launching to see if you have a voting enabled
account.
