Learning Clip at Home
Learning Clip is an online mathematics resource that supports the Renewed Mathematics
Framework. Since the introduction of the original framework in 1999 nearly every primary
school in England now teaches mathematics based on the National Framework.
Learning Clip has thousands of registered users in primary schools across the UK and beyond.
Parents are also welcome to register and can easily support their child’s learning at home
using Learning Clip resources.
There are hundreds of activities and worksheets for children aged 7 to 11 with more being
added on a regular basis. Many of the resources are free to registered users.
You can find appropriate resources by using the year group menu to the left, the topic menu
to the right or by visiting the search page.
Tips for Using Learning Clip with your Children
To help your son/daughter get the most out of their learning it is important first
to choose appropriate activities. Discuss with your child areas of maths they have
enjoyed and topics they feel they could improve at. Most children will be working
generally in line with their year group and the activities have a variety of levels to
stretch even the most able child.
As a starting point you might want to choose an activity from either the present
term of maths teaching or the previous term. So if your child is in year 4, and
has just begun the spring term, you could choose an activity from Year4 Unit2
Try to be relaxed and patient with your child whilst playing the maths
game. It is important that your child
enjoys the activity without feeling the need to complete all the levels.
First listen to Triangle man explain how to play the game. Now let your son/daughter
have a go at the activity, remember let them attempt it with as little prompting
as possible. Advance through the levels or activities until you get to the one where there is a
slight challenge. This is where your son/daughter will begin to
learn new maths concepts.
Discuss with your child any difficulties they are having, do you have any ideas or strategies
to make the tasks easier?
Finally try to use Learning Clip to compliment the teaching your son/daughter
receives at school. Attempting objectives that haven’t been taught in school
can sometimes lead to misconceptions and confuse children. Often difficult maths
concepts are taught over many days. It is always best to work in line with
the maths being taught at your child’s school.
